Information for Staff

1. Network maintenance will occur on Tuesday 24th October 2017 from 23:00 – 04:00.
As a result of this, there will be connectivity outages for 30 minutes between 23:00 - 00:00 and access to the following services may be unavailable.
Services affected will be:
  • KAMAR Portal
  • Moodle (Onstream for us)
  • NZGrapher
2. Establishing your Professional Learning Network (PLN).
As it is coming up to final appraisal time, it is a great time to reflect on your learning throughout the year. As teachers we need to be modelling best practice and make sure we are continuing to learn through collaboration, accessing Professional Learning and Development (PLD) and seeking out information around pedagogical techniques and best practice in the classroom.

To do this effectively you need to have a strong PLN. A PLN is all about making connections with others both in and outside of school where you can gain support, advice, feedback and create new knowledge. Many of you will have joined online communities and be part of established subject networks. The tool below will give you a chance to evaluate your own learning, as an effective PLN needs to be self driven.

You can also explore a new Kit put out by Core Education - A getting Connected Starter Kete (http://connectededucator.org.nz/starter-kete/). The resource has been developed with 5 packages - 30 small daily challenges for your to dip your toes into different social media and educational platforms and find out the best place for you as a teacher to keep up to date with current educational thinking and trends.
You are also able to download the whole kit. With Pedagogical meetings next week, this could be something that could be explored as a Learning Area - what are the best ways that staff find and share information?

According to the National Research council (2000), " Teachers are key to enhancing learning in schools. In order to teach in a manner consistent with new theories of learning, extensive learning opportunities for teachers are required" (p. 203)

Information for staff:

1. After our schools recent MNA (Managing National Assessment) from NZQA our staff Assessment manual that is available via staff resources on Onstream has been updated to reflect some of the feedback that was received. The new updated assessment manual can be found HERE.

2. Near the end of Term 3 via the Matai messenger we signaled that there would be a drop in training day for Windows 10. This training has now been postponed until the start of 2018. Cyclone have been busy connecting up the new area of CGHS, and the school will also be updating a large number of staff laptops at the start of next year so it was thought that it would be better to wait. There are a number of machines in the school that are already running the Windows 10 platform, so please ask if you are unsure about how certain areas of this platform might work.

3. There are a number of resources and readings that you might like to explore in the final few days of the term 3 break for your professional reading:

a. Good article on preparing students for online writing, it's an opinion piece, so food for thought.
b. Series of resources compiled around Future focused learning for teachers to explore, put together by Jono Broome from Haeata: https://padlet.com/jonono/Futurefocusedlearning

4. Ever wanted to make your own GIF to add to one of your online resources - all you need to do is type the work 'gif' before the youtube.com part in a YouTube video: eg. gifyoutube.com/watch?v=gedoSfZvBgE. Once your video loads then you can move the 'time' to the part of the youtube clip that you want to capture.

5. As we head into revision for both Seniors and Juniors this term, you may be interested to read an article around the 'Testing Effect' - how creating quizzes, having students practice exam questions, then finding out what they don't know helps students overall performance.
