Information for Staff

1. Our professional learning session on Tuesday will have 2 parts to it. The first half is linked to the observation data that was synthesied to help create our CGHS 'Culture of Learning'. The team have chosen to do a half our session on 'Checking for understanding'. This will be an interactive session that will have some new strategies for some of you, or a chance to reconnect with why you might do what you do to help engage all learners in the topics you are covering. If you would like some prior reading - and may not have heard of the phrase 'hinge questions' - Dylan Wiliam has a good summary

The second half, is based on presentations created for the Talanoa Ako PLD that a group of staff participated in during the recent break.

Both topics are linked to our strategic goals.

2. An education worth having...

Colleen O'Rourke talks about the best use of AI in education, neural networks inspired by nature and using AI to meet specific needs.

2. You may be interested in exploring this AI tool called Arcade https://arcade.padlet.com/ -  it has ready made games - but you can also create your own and it is free to use. One of the features is that you can add a you tube link and turn the content into a quiz, or upload a pdf - and it will do the creation of the work for you.

3. Knowledge Rich Curricular - a key driver. Dylan Wiliam argues that a content-heavy, "knowledge-rich" curriculum is not just a matter of tradition, but a fundamental necessity for develo0ping higher-order thinking and social equity. The full reading can be found HERE.

What the Data Shows About Girls’ School Environments

Across 12 countries, PISA data shows that girls in girls’ schools report stronger engagement, confidence, and sense of belonging than their peers in coed environments. Students are more likely to experience enthusiastic, adaptive teaching (54% report higher teacher engagement), feel confident (77%), and develop a sense of purpose (75% vs. 69% in coed settings). They also report fewer classroom disruptions, greater persistence, and lower fear of failure, creating conditions where effort, leadership, and wellbeing can take root.

A summary can be found here:  The positive effects of the Girls School Environment - PISA

2. This year Canterbury SPACPAC Polyfest is being held over 2 days. Christchurch Girls' High School | Te Kura o Hine Waiora are performing on the Saturday morning.
