1. Looking for an extra bit of money? The Learning Place is proud to announce a new partnership with the social enterprise LearnCoach, an online learning platform that provides free tutorials to secondary students. Together we have launched 'Flipped', a venture which offers internal assessments for students to sit online and gain real NZQA credits, granting many students in difficult situations a second chance at gaining their qualifications.

The Opportunity

- LearnCoach and The Learning Place are looking to build a team of experienced secondary school teachers to mark assessments that students submit

- This is an excellent opportunity for teachers who have a few extra hours per week, would like to make some extra money and contribute to a programme which will positively impact thousands of students nationwide.

2. Fulbright New Zealand is delighted to invite staff at Christchurch Girls' High School -Te Kura o Hine Waiora to apply for the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching. If you are interested go to the  website to seek further information.

These awards are for accomplished New Zealand teachers in primary or secondary schooling to participate in a fully funded 4 month intensive professional development programme in the US. The awards are an investment in the individual teacher, their school, students and communities.

The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching connect New Zealand teachers with their counterparts from around the world and create opportunities for grantees to learn, prosper, and work with others to exchange expertise, expand pedagogical knowledge and problem solve.

The awards are generously supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Education. The Ministry will fund full relief costs to the grantee’s school through the Teach NZ Prestigious Awards Programme.

2. Professional Learning and Development Opportunity

Information for Staff

1. The Year 9 parent evening will follow the same format as last year. All teachers of Year 9's are expected to attend the evening with HOLAs/HODs there to support other staff if needed. At 6pm all parents will be in the PAC to be addressed by a number of different people.

Staff will be grouped in Learning Areas in the Arts block for parents to go an meet their daughter's teachers. Please make sure that you have your name badge on.

The PTA will be providing wine and cheese for the evening.

2. Delving Deeper 4, is a professional learning day where teachers share with teachers what's engaging our learners, is running this year on May 9th at Riccarton Park and they are now inviting teachers in schools to register a willingness to share their stories of successful practice. 

What - a one day sharing of 'stories around engaging learners' . They are looking for teachers to present their stories of success (and what hasn't gone so well) so that others can learn from their experiences.Here are two examples from Delving Deeper 3:

'Tama Tu, Tama Ora' is a literacy intervention programme that was trialled in 2017 with a focus on engaging our boys and improving their achievement. We particularly focused on our Maori and Pasifika boys who were neither engaged nor achieving. The programme created a boy friendly curriculum and removed a lot of their typical boundaries or escape routes. It was hugely successful and this workshop will simply explain what we did and how we did it.'

'A collaborative cross curricular experience at Secondary School. How can we work together collaboratively with teachers and learners? Last year we collapsed conventional timetables to work together across five curriculum areas at year 9 and 10. This presentation and discussion looks at one group from that experience, their successes and challenges and looks ahead to further collaborative practise.'

When – Thursday May 9th from 9am to 2.45pm

Where – Riccarton Park 

Why – to share our practice, grow collaboration and learn from each other.

Who – anyone in your school who would like to share what they are doing because it works. Because of the numbers our venue can hold, schools will be restricted to a maximum of 8 participants and this includes those presenting or attending. Presentations can be made by two teachers and involving students as a part of a presentation is encouraged.

How – After an opening provocation by Kaila Colbin, attendees will participate in four presentations offered - two in the morning and two in the afternoon, each of 45 minutes. Presenters may be asked to present one, two or three times depending on interest once teachers register their attendance - this process will occur once we have a list of presentation topics to share with schools. It is hoped that presentations will be two way and those attending are given an opportunity to ask questions. Technology will not be made available but presenters would be able to bring resources to support their presentation. 

Cost –  There is no cost for presenters for the day but any relief costs etc need to be covered by your school. The registration process will be on line once we get confirmation of presenters and the registration cost for delegates or those not presenting, will be $60. Further details will be sent to all schools once presenters areconfirmed.

Now!!! -They are now looking for teachers within our schools (Primary, Intermediate and Secondary) to share their stories of how they engage learners - what's worked and what hasn't.

Information for Staff

1. Congratulations for everyone for making it through the first week - it was nice to have a break in the middle! It seems our new students are settling in well, and the number of subject changes are slowing down!

2. New Google classroom:

Many of you will have been navigating the new Google classroom. 

Some of the changes most likely to be of interest include:

• The addition of the classwork page to the stream. On the classwork page you can create topics and then put work underneath them and also easily 'drag and drop' either individual items of work or topics as a whole.  The stream will also show when you have added a new item to the classwork page.  It is likely the stream page will be used for students to see what the teacher has posted most recently, however, the classwork page looks easier to work from and see multiple items of work under.
  
• The addition of a comment bank. If you often find yourself writing similar comments, you can now create a comment bank. When you go to write a comment, start by writing # and all of the comments in your bank will show up. If you start to type a keyword, the comments with those keywords will show up.
• It is now easy to click on the icon next to the course code so it automatically enlarges it to make it easy for students to see if projected to the board.
• No 'about' page where you used to be able to put class resources. Instead, you will need to click on create and then select material. This will allow you to post to you classwork page some resources you want students to have.

3.Tomorrow Schools Review Report - this has now been released and can be found HERE. If you want to know more about the recommendations that have come out of the review, and are currently out for consultation, as well as the rationale behind 'why' schools need to change then have a read through of the summary document.

4. You may be interested in a couple of tools that have been uploaded onto TKI and have been written by the Ministry of Education. If your learning area is undergoing a review of their curriculum, and what you are offering, the guides have some great questions and ideas to help you get started. • These are on Monday/Tuesday next week. 
• Please check timetable and let your class know what time their photo is. 
• Please make your way over for photos 10 minutes prior to the allocated time for your class.

• Staff Individual Photographs any time during Monday and Tuesday. 
• All new staff must have a photo taken (and if you would like to change last years, or did not have a photo taken last year)
