1.PLD - Core Ed - opportunities for term 3. Possible topics that could be of interest include; te reo Māori, Universal Design for Learning, collaboration, Māori history, and play-based learning. For more information visit their website HERE 

2. We have been sent an invitation for CGHS staff to attend a professional development session with Dr Michael Carr-Gregg in the Charles Luney Auditorium at St Margaret’s College on Monday 22 July, from 3.45pm until 5.00pm.  There is no cost to attend and no requirement to rsvp.

Michael will be presenting on “How Technology can help Staff Mental Health”.  Research shows that teaching staff have the highest level of occupational stress. This presentation explores how staff can use technology to promote their own wellbeing in the form of the latest evidence-based smartphone apps, web-based programs and biometric devices. The afternoon sessions covers diet, exercise, sleep, mindfulness etc.

Dr Michael Carr-Gregg is one of Australia's highest profile psychologists; he is an author, broadcaster and a specialist in parenting, children, adolescents and the use of technology for mental health. Michael has worked in the area of health psychology, bullying, parenting adolescents and adolescent mental health.

In 1985, he founded the world's first national teenage cancer patients support group, Canteen - The Australian Teenage Cancer Patient's Society. Michael has worked in private practice as a child psychologist academic, researcher and he spent four years working as a political lobbyist.

1. Powhiri July 4: Heads up information 

• Dress code- Males need to wear shirt and tie. There is a chance males may get moved to the front. Females need to wear a skirt or dress
• Parking- There will be no parking on site for the morning.
• Seating-  All staff need to be behind the paepae ( no one will be in the upstairs area)
• Office will be closed for the morning as office staff will be at the powhiri.
• All cellphones will need to be on silent or turned off. 

2. TALIS results are now available - In late 2017 a number of staff were asked to complete a questionnaire related to teaching and learning, in order to track how this has changed over time. The first volume collating the results from New Zealand and another 47 countries is now available to look through (all 220 pages....). 3. Effective Questioning in the Classroom - Listen to the podcast from Dylan Williams

In the podcast he explains how to make questioning to find out what students actually know more effective for practice in the classroom.

There is also a great white paper link which I recommend on the page.  The paper is called the cargo cult white paper and addresses all the bias that affect teaching and learning and the waste of energy and PD which is not useful or improves educational outcomes particularly well.

2 During the Christmas holidays, Clare Fowler, spent three weeks in Jerusalem as part of the NZ Educators' Seminar studying the teaching of the Holocaust.  

Clare's teaching journey is the focus of this term's Holocaust Centre for New Zealand (Te Pūtahi Urupatu o Aotearoa) 'Meet the Teacher' slot. (read article here)

Clare is looking forward to sharing her story with interested CGHS staff in the near future.

3. Bookweek reminder for staff from EWL:

We are looking forward to seeing you all in costume at lunchtime B2 on Tuesday 18th June in the library for the inaugural Bookweek Cosplay! The students don't get to have all the fun or win all the chocolate.

3. Metacognitive tools - Mindmeister in Google Docs.

Mindmeister is an add-on that you can use easily in a Google doc. Mindmapping is a tool that allows students to organise and consolidate ideas. It enhances note taking and encourages students to make connections.

If you are looking for an easy add-on then: 

a. Open up your google doc, and click on 'Add-ons'.

b. Search up Mindmeister

c. Students may take notes or read and article and group their ideas under a series of bullet points.

d. Once the have completed their list, they highlight it, and click on 'Mindmeister' and it will generate the Mindmap in the google doc.

The mokoroa (grub) may be small, but it cuts through the Kahikatea 

This whakatauki reflects that small things can have a great impact. It encourages us to think big.Although numbers or resources may be small, like the mokoroa, it is possible to achieve great tasks/achievements.

1. Addressing misunderstandings and confusion - There is an update on the NCEA review that answers extra questions in relation to the initial release of the NCEA review. This can be found HERE.

2. Samoan Language Week: I celebration of Samoan Language Week, Te Papa have created an activity book to help students learn some of the basics of the language.

3. FYI, assessment information that is currently on Kamar can now be found on the Google Calendar. This has nearly been completed.
