Information for Staff

1. The final Secondary Community of Practice Hui for 2017 will be held at Rangiora High School’s new building on Thursday November 9th 1.30-4.30. This Hui is the third in the series from Grow Waitaha - with a number of you having already visited Rolleston and Haeata. If you are interested in attending this session, please let BLS know.

2. Here is a link to view a recent seminar that was held in Wellington on ‘Walking the tightrope: Balancing prevention and protection - promoting resiliency to achieve a safe environment online’. It was hosted by Sean Lyons who, Netsafe states, "comes from a background in the IT industry and the education sector having spent part of his career as a classroom teacher and school leader. He is incredibly knowledgeable about online challenges and is responsible for Netsafe’s programme to combat child sexual exploitation material". We have permission to share this seminar within our school.

3. Tip for marking online work quickly: I (Liz) am not the fastest, nor the most efficient typist and so marking or commenting on classes of student online work can be quite time-consuming. I have recently discovered Talk and Comment - Voice notes anywhere and I am really enjoying using the tool. It has sped up my marking time considerably and I like that the voice recorded notes can be integrated with Google docs, email and more making it very versatile. It is an extension available through the Chrome web store - simply type into the Search bar 'Talk and comment' as in the image above. If you click on the title of this post, you can see more about it.

4. Staff Wellbeing: Why teachers should make sleep a priority - something to think about as we approach the final week for the end of term 3.

Tues 26: Student Support

Information for Staff:

1. Heads up - In term 4 the school will be looking at migrating to Windows 10. There will be a drop in training session on Monday 16 October from 9am-3pm. If you could pencil this into your diaries.

2. Supporting students with BYOD includes encouraging typing as an important skill. There are a number of typing games available online and here follows a selection that appeared in the latest edition of Interface, a NZ magazine that supports the use of ICT in learning.
Nitro Type - this is a typing competition that has real-time car racing against others around the world as its basis. The faster one types, the faster the car moves.
Typing Exercise - is touted as a great way to start typing as it is quick. It can be customised for the user too.
Keybr - teaches touch typing by generating random words which are to be typed as shown. It then automatically tailors typing lessons to skill level.

3. Maori Language Week - as we come to the end of the week - a reminder that with the new Practicing Teacher Criteria, using Te reo in our classrooms becomes even more important. PTC 1 refers to Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership, and teachers are requried to practise and develop the use of te reo and tikanga Maori. Think about how you can comfortably meet this standard by starting with small steps.

A couple of resources that I came across that could be of interest were:
a. Te Ahu o Te Reo – The Health of the Māori Language - a blog post on Te reo in education
b. From Stuff - As we look to creating a school Waiata - stuff created a post on their 5 top Waiata - Click HERE to see what they are.

Information for Teachers

1. Maori Language Week/ Te Wiki o te Reo Māori: Next week is Maori Language Week and we will be running a series of activities and competitions to celebrate the use of Te reo. Each day there will be a daily quiz sent out by PWL.
(From Christchurch City Libraries)
  • Rahina/ Monday - Have a go at greeting your students in Te reo (see HERE for words and phrases you can use in your classroom)
  • Ratu/ Tuesday - Staff Waiata
  • Raapa/ Wednesday - Maori Language students out at interval and lunchtime asking questions in Te reo and if students or staff answer correctly they get a treat.
  • Rapare/ Thursday - TBC
  • Rāmere/ Friday - Shared kai for morning tea - it would be great to bring along something to share from each Learning area , this replaces the support staff/library/IT scheduled morning tea - they are happy to move to Friday 22nd - so that means we have a morning tea scheduled for the next 3 Friday's.
There will also be a number of Te reo sayings available in the staffroom to collect and put up in classrooms.

Next week for our senior students will be all about revision heading into our School Examinations. It would be great if we can avoid the term 'Mock', as this conveys the idea that these grades may not count.  As these are our derived grade examinations in some cases they do count, as we all know from last year, they can also count on a very large scale.
Our wonderful group of PCT (Provisionally Certified) teachers met and discussed different ways that we could revise with students - both senior and junior. We have collated our small sample of ideas in Google Slides.

3. A couple of blog posts that have come into by emails this week might be of interest to some of you. The first is from Claire Amos, who has been the Deputy Principal at Hobsonville Point High School in Auckland, one of the first big open plan schools.
She talks about how from this experience, there will be a new Urban High School opening up in Auckland next year focusing on STEAM education. As part of this Blog post, she gives an overview of what their timetable will look like. Worth a read to find out what is happening on the New Zealand Education landscape.

The second post was related why learning and teaching has changed, and are we making sure our students are getting the skills they need for now and in the future. The Post can be found here.
