Term 1 Break - 2020

Mai i te kōpae ki te urupa, tātou ako tonu ai.
From the cradle to the grave we are forever learning.

Information for Staff

1. No Calendar of Events for the next two weeks. This weeks whakatauki represents us all as we are quickly upskilling on tools to engage our learners in this new world of online learning.

2. Reflecting on our school values at this time
a. Whanaungatanga - Checking in with staff, students and whanau. Staying connected using technology is going to be important for everyone’s well-being. It appears that Google Meet and Zoom have become the new norm.
b. Manaakitanga Making use of student and teacher strengths. Lots of great collaboration happening across the school. A few of our wonderful Prefect team have shown this already with a joint collaboration where they have created a Google site https://sites.google.com/cghs.school.nz/the-study-buddy/home. There are a number of our ex-CGHS students who are also willing to help out as well with tutoring. This is a great initiative. For those who might be struggling with any internals or content, please ask them to sign up for help.
c. Aroha - empathy and concern for others has been evident, lots of great communication with our parents/caregivers/whanau, students and staff - and also nice to have email replies from our community showing their appreciation for all that you are doing!
d. Rangitiritanga - these are challenging times, and we should all be proud of how we are adjusting to this new normal for the next 4 weeks (hopefully only 4....)

3. Many of us have had our inbox inundated with links to great sharing of resources, upgrading access etc. The Mindlab have also created a site to help teacher's come to grips with distance learning. Click on the picture below to explore the resources.

4. Online assessment - Have found a couple of great diagrams/pictures that you might find useful.

Information for staff

1. FYI - I have taken the sports events off the calendar - and trying to keep on top of what is still going ahead and what has been currently cancelled. Apologies if errors arise.

Please note the changes to the assembly slots on the Wednesday for the Year levels - as scholars/academic assembly is cancelled we will hold year level assemblies and hand out the certificates and badges to the girls' over the next 2 weeks (no hand shaking of course - but hope we can send out some photo's to parents).

2. I came across this yesterday ..... a visual representation of readiness for online learning!

I have had some great conversations with HOLAs over the last few days regarding readiness for online learning, and will go over a summary of the outcomes with the HOLA's at L&T on Tuesday, this will also be shared with the whole staff.

The decision has been made to change the focus of our late start on April 2 to one that will be a department meeting to allow for discussions around resources for online learning for both possible short term and longer term closures if we get to that stage. There has been a lot of great resources that have been made freely available to schools as well as tips published from overseas teachers who are in the current situation of resorting to online teaching and learning.

I have also been reminded of this document re Life-long learners that was published about 5 years ago, regarding the educational aims for our students. Worth a revisit as 2025 does not feel that long away -

Information for staff

1. The effects of streaming in the secondary school on learning outcomes for Australian students – A review of the international literature (Johnston and Wildy, 2016). A very good reading and discussion starter outlining the impacts of streaming on different students.

2. Accelerating Student Achievement:
There have been a few questions around the idea of 'Accelerating student achievement' and what this means. This was also a particular focus from the recent ERO, and they are required to report on our data to the Ministry.
Accelerated learning is described as a learner's progress showing a 'noticeably faster upward trajectory than their previous learning; and is progressing faster than the expected rate of progress. It is about working with students who are at risk of underachieving and increasing the rate of progress so that more than one curriculum progression can be achieved in a year. If you would like to explore this more go to:

3.  Simon Sinek - Start with the Why - a good little example that uses the model created by Simon Sinek - linked to getting students to read.

Information for Staff

1. A number of PLD opportunities have come in that you may be interested in attending:

a. Impacted Ako 2020 (see https://www.impacted.co.nz/impacted2020schedule) on Thursday 16 April. This course involves a number of sessions that support the implementation of digital technologies across the curriculum.

b. Delving Deeper: 38 presentations have been offered for Delving Deeper 4 on Friday March 27th this year at Riccarton Park and there are presentations for primary, intermediate and secondary teachers. The day will start at 9am and conclude by 3pm - morning tea and lunch will be provided.
Teachers  are invited to register for the event as a delegate. This can be done at the link below - $60 per delegate.

When teachers register, they will be sent an email confirmation note that will ask the delegate to choose four of the presentations to attend. This selection will not be binding but will enable them to arrange appropriate sized venues.

Schools are asked to restrict attendance to no more than eight teachers and registrations are asked for by Tuesday March 17th.

Kaila Colbin is the guest speaker on the day and will be provoking attendees with a presentation focussed on being courageous in times of rapid change. You can find out more about Kaila at https://nz.linkedin.com/in/kcolbin. She is currently running workshops linked to Brene Brown's 'Dare to Lead'.

Full list of presentations can be found HERE

c. The Alliance is offering a fellowship of AUD10,000 to support outstanding educators from member schools to investigate topics or issues related to girls’ education. The Fellowship aims to:
  • inspire new ideas, innovation, and excellence in girls’ education
  • expand knowledge and expertise for the benefit of girls’ schools.
Design your own project: The subject and scope for projects is limitless — as long as a benefit to girls’ education is evident and the recipient is willing to share the knowledge gained through the Fellowship with the Alliance and its members.
I have been asked to share this information with any Christchurch Girls' High staff member who may be interested in applying for the Fellowship program.
Applications close 31 March 2020.

2. The Importance of Grit:
Teacher Angela Duckworth realised that IQ wasn't the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. In this video, she explains her theory of "grit" as a predictor of success. Learning to persevere might be a key to success in life
