Information for Staff

1. The structure of the day for Seniors on Friday 6 November will be the following

Period 1 - Year 13 will be in NZQA Assembly in PAC 
Period 2 - Year 12 NZQA Assembly in PAC and Year 13 in GYM with ORC

Morning tea - Quad - Year 13 and Staff

Period 3 - Full School Assembly - Year 12 and 13 will leave at the end of the assembly.

Period 4 - Year 11 NZQA Assembly in PAC - they will then leave after this.

3. I have just recently listened to this podcast from 'Habits of Leadership. Episode 34, is on 'What can school Leaders learn from Learning through Covid19" - have a listen, and consider/ reflect upon the following as you move from exam prep and marking into planning for 2021.

a. What things did you consider changing post lockdown?
b. How many of these did you actually put in place?
c. What would you like to reconsider now?

5. Free book access "A Learner's Paradise - How New Zealand is Reimagining Education" by Richard Wells.

Description: Do you think education works? Does it meet the needs of future society, business and most importantly, the average school leaver? In this book, Richard Wells explains his amazement at how all the components of New Zealand education collaborate in creating an ever forward-moving system better prepared for the 21st century than any other. After teaching in the UK, Wells moved to New Zealand in 2006 to find there was no prescribed curriculum and teachers were trusted to run the whole system, including writing high school graduation assessments themselves. 
The Government is appreciated by teachers as a supportive aide to them as they hold each other to account in a positive and collaborative nationally networked system. In New Zealand, teachers are proud of the education system they operate and develop with their students, some being unaware of how lucky they are.
Wells explains each of the elements and organisations that jointly form the world’s leading 21st Century education system.  He describes the developments and decisions that were made in achieving this and how it is moving into a phase of using student-negotiated national assessments that few other countries’ educators could even contemplate. The book is filled with useful diagrams and posters to illustrate key themes and pedagogies. Wells paints a picture of what happens when young people are measured by their depth of thinking and understanding and can personalise their approach to doing so. The book introduces you to a country where the leading people and schools shape the future of world public education.

1. Revision time - 

a. Here is a growth mindset goal setting framework that might be helpful for your Senior classes to set goals for the upcoming external examinations.

b. As we head towards school examinations, you might might want to highlight to ākonga why it is important to make an early start on revision. This video clip shows nine scientifically proven study tips, and this article discusses 10 smart study tactics that support how the brain actually works. c. Use the ESOL online teaching strategies to plan revision lessons - start with the 'thinking and metacognition' section.

d. Also check out the '60 different revision ideas' - a collated collection of activities to help change up how revision is done each lesson.

1. The end of the term has come around incredibly quickly - here are a couple of quick reads for the holiday break that could be of interest:

a. How can teachers and school leaders improve educational outcomes for marginalised students? Nina Hood from the Education Hub has written a summary article based on Russell Bishop's book - Teaching to the North-East; Relationship-based learning in practice (2019)

b. Derek Wenmoth has just released his new blog post - "The case for re-invention" - he states  "As we settle back into school and the routines we are used to there, what are we doing to address the deep-seated racial, ethnic and cultural prejudice that fashioned the assumptions that underpin our current model of education?"

2. Cheryl Doig has shared information regarding Learning Days next term. Details from her email are copied below:

We are excited to share Learning Days that are being held 12-18 October, i.e. the first week of next term. Our initial programme is launched and much of the programme is very pertinent to secondary schools. This includes:

• Challenging Racism and Homophobia in Secondary Schools
• Digital Equity
• A number of workshops on gaming and technologies
• COVID Recovery and the Future of Learning - Joanna Norris

1. From Michelle's email for Te Wiki o Te reo Māori - 

Use The Kupu app available free from the App store. As you take photos of items, the word will appear in te reo Māori. You can also listen to the correct pronunciation.

Use the Māori dictionary to search for any word or phrase in English or te reo and listen to the pronunciation too. 

When you are out and about, use the Arataki App to unlock stories based on your proximity to places of cultural significance.

Watch the creation story of Ranginui and Papatuānuku through augmented reality via the T.I.A app. Search "Māori cultural stories" in the Apple Store or Ngāti Whātua Ōrāmei in Google Play.  When you scan your surroundings, you choose a place for the 3D story to appear! 

2. When you face a challenge that is difficult to overcome you can use this whakataukī. If a student is struggling to understand a concept, or finding a situation difficult, you can reassure them that although it is challenging, choppy, that they can achieve it by rowing through it and persevere.
