1. As we come to the end of Te Wiki Te reo Māori, here are a couple of interesting articles and other resources:

a. He Reo Ka-Tipu - Growing Te reo  Māori in New Zealand schools. This is a literature review that has been released this week to support teachers that are looking to strengthen their reo Māori teaching and learning programmes. It is primary focused but has goals and explanations that are also relevant to NZ Secondary schools.

b. Te reo Māori in classrooms - Georgina Stewart (Set 2014)

c. Create and learn your own pepeha at https://pepeha.nz/create-pepeha

d. If you would like to refresh your knowledge of the history of the area around CGHS, you may want to read "The values and history of the Ōtākaro and North and East Frames" by Associate Professor Te Maire Tau.

e. At the staff meeting where we looked at indicators to evaluate where we are as a school around our CRP (see previous Matai for summary link). You may also be interested in reflecting on your own classroom practice and complete an audit of what you are doing and where your work on's might be. The following checklist could be useful - Click HERE for details.

f. And finally a great song, recently released by Six60.

Information for Staff

1. Yesterday we had confirmation that students will now be awarded Learning Recognition Credits (LRC) for NCEA this year.
Level 1 students will receive 1 LRC per 5 credits achieved through assessment, up to a cap of 8 LRCs and Levels 2 and 3 will receive a maximum of 6.

There is still no change to the endorsement for subjects or certificates or for the 14 credit minimum in 3 subjects in level 3 subjects needed for University Entrance.

Remember that these credits are not awarded against a subject and do not come with Achieved, Merit or Excellence, but give a bit of breathing room for those who were wondering whether they would meet the 80 credit minimum at Level 1, or the 60 credits needed for Level 2 and 3.

2. Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori – Māori Language Week has been celebrated in New Zealand since 1975. It acknowledges and celebrates the Māori language as a unique cultural treasure for all New Zealanders.
Te reo Māori has its origins in East Polynesia. The language is closely related to Tahitian and Cook Islands Māori and to a lesser degree to Hawaiian and Marquesan. In recent years, the use of te reo Māori has become more prevalent and people are working hard to ensure the language is rejuvenated and preserved for future generations.
Each year The Māori Language Commission sets a theme for the week, and a range of activities, promotions, and events encouraging the use of te reo Māori take place around the country.
The theme this year is:
Kia Kaha te Reo Māori - Let's make the Māori language strong
Below are some words and phrases that you can use to embrace the Māori culture.
Kura -School
Mahi - Work
He aha te wā? - What is the time?
Inu wai - Drink Bottle
Ārai kanohi - Face mask
Kei te pēhea koe? - How are you?
Kei te hiakai au - I am hungry
Kia tere! - Hurry up!
Pōmārie - Goodnight
3. Google Arts and Culture is an incredibly rich resource for teachers. Resources are organised into subject areas with lesson plans, or you can browse through activities. Click here to see what is available.

Students can experience virtual 3D tours of famous sites and landmarks, such as the Palace of Versailles, the Colosseum, sports facilities, museums and theatres. Click here to see what is on offer.

1. TOD 25 November -
In term two, the local Ministry of Education office worked with the Canterbury West Coast Secondary Principals Association (CWCSPA) to survey schools and produce a report about the NCEA change implementation programme.
Overwhelmingly, the request was for a ‘Jumbo Day’ approach to the next teacher-only day. Therefore, in response, we are now under way with planning for a ‘Jumbo Day’ for the next accord NCEA TOD on Thursday 25th of November.
They are excited by the prospect of such a day for our colleagues to collaborate/share ideas/learn from each other around Level 1 standards in subject areas. The outcomes of the day will be aligned with those outlined by National Office. The plan is to have the day split across schools based on the eight learning areas. Within these learning areas, teachers will have the opportunity to work in subject groups.

The Accord Teacher Only Days for 2022 are now available at https://ncea.education.govt.nz/teacher-only-days

2. Staff summary of the Mātauraka Mahaanui Indicators - Thank you for completing the audit to gives us an overview of where as a school we should be further strengthening our culturally responsive practice. A full break down can be found HERE.

An overall summary against the targets (see link above for the sheet). The overall theme for the 3 areas appears to be in the 'emerging' section.

Information for Staff

1. At the recent National AP, DP conference one of the key note speakers was Alex Hotere-Barnes - “Te tiriti o Waitangi and Schooling: A collective responsibility”
One of the videos that he showed during his talk was from a series called 'Land of the Long White Cloud' called Inheriting Privilege. Very thought provoking and something everyone should watch as we move through our Culturally Responsive PLD.
Further episodes in the series can be found HERE.

As we move into our planning for Level 1 - we have been challenged to 'be curious about new ideas and practices and let go of harmful patterns" that we might currently be holding. There are legitimate Māori and Western perspectives and we are not culturally neutral.

When planning new units to include Mātauranga Māori we need to consider the following:
  • What we know already.
  • How did we come to know it?
  • Why we believe or reject it?
  • What are the values behind our teaching practice?
  • What and why (and what) do we change?
  • Is the Mātauranga Māori deep and meaningful in its implementation?
  • Can all of our learners see themselves in the teaching and learning of the standards - that goes beyond the assessment?
  • Does the course outline you develop support teaching through diverse perspectives, knowledges and methodologies?
2. An updated re Level 1 - things you may or may not know....

Non exam externals:

Designed to reflect a small volume of evidence - level 1 - 750 - 800 words max.

Internal assessment - is designed to be a sample of learning, not assess a whole topic.

Assessment is not the learning - it is not meant to be as onerous as we are currently making assessment.

Conscious of timing of when the assessment is due - get pushed to the end of T3 currently and they would like to avoid all assessments for all subjects being due at the same time.

Non exam of externals, if you are wondering why - it is about equity!

Some possible forms of external assessment

Exam - traditional exam, open book exam, digital exam, decision based exam

CAA- task and stimulus material that may be given in advance

Portfolios - outcome portfolio, creative portfolio, diary writing or reflective journals

Reports - structured report

Levels 2 and 3 - courses will be more specialised - and are likely to have more exam based subjects, rather than level 1. The release of this information will not be available till Term 3 in 2022.

External results will all be released in January - so if non exam external in T2, then students won't get their results till later.
