Information for Staff:

1. ERO is looking at how the changes to NCEA Level 1 are going and wants to hear from schools about their experiences.

A report is being written to go to the Ministry based on the findings. They want to understand the views and experiences of implementing the NCEA Level 1 changes, and its impacts. The Minister of Education commissioned this review to help understand how things are going and our school’s responses can help inform future decisions about the qualification and school supports. If you can spend 5- 10 mins completing the survey - see link below.

1. Timeline for the introduction of the updated curriculum:

We have just been sent through the updated timeline for the implementation of the curriculum. Schools Years 7 - 13 must teach the updated English and mathematics and statistics curriculum starting Term 1, 2026.

Years 11 to 13 will have a national curriculum that will be broken out into subjects to more clearly align with NCEA achievement standards and senior secondary programmes of learning.

We know that the NCEA change programme has been rephased to allow time to develop clear curricula for senior secondary level subjects before NCEA Levels 2 and 3 are further developed. This was announced by the Minister of Education in April this year.

Evidence-based teaching practices will be integrated into the national curriculum, providing clarity about what teaching and learning is needed at each year level, and the practices that work best.

The work already done on the draft common practice model and the Ako Framework will be put into a single document.

The new curriculum will retain and strengthen the ‘Understand, Know, Do’ model in the updated national curriculum, which has already been tested. It will also usie Mātauranga — Pūkenga — Whanonga (Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions) as the organising model in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

Progressions: 

There will be five phases of learning which progress students’ knowledge and understanding over time. These phases are Years 0-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-13. These will now be strengthened by a year-by-year sequence so teachers know what they need to cover in each year.

2. An interesting article about students refusing to complete work or hand it in, and the possible reasons behind it. Students who have more choice and autonomy are likely to be more engaged in their work. Students may experience a fear of failure and need a sense of belonging, These are the main takeaways and the article suggests ways of dealing with them.

1. Food for thought, recently I listened to a talk from a leader at a Christchurch school around how a number of teachers have trialed the use of Microsoft co-pilot as part of their teaching and learning program. Remember that co-pilot has commercial data protection, so that anything fed into the prompt is private to CGHS and our domain.

The first example was in a Year 13 class, where students are often asked to read quite complex articles.....

Students reported that by using the tool, it helped them to understand more complex articles, they progressed faster through the standard and better results reflected a better understanding of the task by the students.

The second trial was with a Year 11 English class asking for targeted feedback on writing.

The prompt was "Act as a friendly and encouraging writing tutor for a 15 year-old New Zealand student preparing for NCEA Achievement Standard 91926. First, prompt me for a piece of creative writing, and give me feedback on how to improve. Please provide me with feedback on the style and accuracy of my writing to help me improve how I write independently. Don't just rewrite things for me."

The third was to have co-pilot as one of the stakeholders who was giving feedback on a draft brief.

Always interesting to see what other schools are doing, and think about how a small target change can help student outcomes and grow AI literacy across the school.
