The survey can be accessed at 'NCEA have your say'.

2. Digital Technology: Safe and Responsible use in Schools

In light of recent events, discussion has started again around the use of cellphones here at CGHS. Therefore if you suspect a device has been used in an inappropriate way, then please be aware of what you can and can not do as the teacher.

We are able to ask students to reveal what we suspect is inappropriate and ask them to delete it. We are also able to ask a student to surrender the device and retain it for a 'reasonable period', but if we do get a student to surrender a device, then a record must be kept of when and why. (see page 20 - 21 of report).

It must be clear that there must be 'reasonable grounds' for a removal of the device, in that you suspect that there is something on it that may harm others in some way. Texting or using Facebook in class, is not sufficient grounds.

The report outlines that you, as the teacher, should not be searching the device, as this could open up issues for both the student and the teacher. If you do think that you have grounds to take a device off a student, asking the student to password protect the device before it is handed over means that a teacher's integrity can be maintained. On page 8 of the document 'Digital Technology: Safe and responsible use in schools', there is a flow chart of steps to follow if you suspect misuse in your classroom. Please use the schools discipline system if students are not following your instructions regarding whether a cellphone is allowed to be visible and used in the lesson.
