Tues - Staff (CRP - Rongohia te Hau)

Information for Staff

1. Rongohia te Hau: CGHS has PLD hours  that will be used this year to focus on our CRP. The basis of the application was around - "Where are we, how do we know, and where are we going'. The first step in the process will inform the second phase where we will get a report that will give a clear indication of where as a school we need to focus our efforts in response to both cultural responsive practice and relational pedagogies. At this stage, the introduction for this to happen will occur at a staff meeting on Tuesday 15 August.

Purpose of Rongohia Te Hau:

  • To take a snapshot of culturally responsive and relational pedagogy across the school / Kāhui Ako as a slice in time
  • Rongohia te Hau provides baseline data about Culturally Responsive and Relational Pedagogy with, by and for schools as evidence for action planning and professional growth
  • To bring together three pieces of evidence for critical reflection. For example – perception surveys, in-class observations, and achievement data

Week 3 - Term 3 - 2023

Mā mua ka kite a muri, mā muri ka ora a mua

Those who lead give sight to those who follow, those who follow give life to those who lead

This whakatauki also speaks to the importance of working together. It acknowledges and values the importance of both the leader and the followers for both are essential and co-dependent.

Information for Staff

1. Curriculum Support

This term we should expect to see the full version of “Te Mātaiaho” available for use. The other resource that will be coming out in Term 4 to be aware of is the “Phase 2 of the Common Practice Model” as part of the “Literacy, Communications and Maths Strategy”.

The curriculum advisers and NCEA implementation facilitators are starting to get booked up for the TOD at the end of the year. However, they will offer the regional workshops (breakfast, online and after school sessions) to help schools run these days. The MOE will confirm the dates and times soon so if you wish to attend you have plenty of time to organise.

The MOE is committed to providing support that is tailored to the needs of the educational setting, and this may look like:

  • in-person or online chats and curriculum planning support
  • curriculum lead-run teacher only day, staff meeting sessions and workshops
  • working with school leaders, middle leaders, and teaching teams
  • sharing resources and new developments
  • Have a look through the summary of Curriculum Resources, Links and Contacts.

If you would like to book a facilitator please let BLS know ASAP.

2. And just because Lipsynch is coming up shortly - I thought it timely that we reshare the staff one from a few years ago - always love the ending Christine and we will miss you!

Week 2 - Term 3 - 2023

He iti te mokoroa, nāna i kati te kahikatea

The mokoroa (grub) may be small, but it cuts through the Kahikatea

This whakatauki reflects that small things can have a great impact. It encourages us to think big. Although numbers or resources may be small, like the mokoroa, it is possible to achieve great tasks/achievements.

1. Updates on Google Bard
a. You are now able to upload a picture and ask for information about it. Google Lens has been added to Bard to allow this to happen. So if you want more information about an image or to have a funny caption written you can have a little bit of help.

b. Once you have your answer, you are also able to get Bard to read the text aloud - so it is able read out the answers given. It was also able to tell me who created the image.

2. In the second half of the year our Kaiako will be learning our second karakia to use at briefings. We will go over it at staff meeting on Tuesday.
Listen to the recording to help with your pronunciation.

Whakataka te hau ki te uru

Whakataka te hau ki te tonga

Kia mākinakina ki uta

Kia mātaratara ki tai

E hī ake ana te atakura

He tio, he huka, he hau hū

Tīhei mauri ora!

Cease the winds from the west

Cease the winds from the south

Let the breeze blow over the land

Let the breeze blow over the ocean

Let the red-tipped dawn come with a sharpened air.

A touch of frost, a promise of a glorious day.

1. Nau mai hoki mai to term 3. Hope you have all managed to have a restful break and got to spend time with whanau and friends.
As we head into the new term, always one of the busiest, with course selection planning, preparing our ākonga for school and end of year examinations (and subsequent marking), testimonial writing, and continued planning for the changes ahead. Just remember to do what you all do best, which is inspire and empower our ākonga so that they can reach their goals. See you all on Monday.

2. If you have been continuing to explore what AI platforms are coming online, then you may want to have a look at https://www.canopydirectory.com/. This is a directory of reliable websites under development and worth exploring.

3. I came across this resource - a choice board for students to use during peer assessment. Uses students centred language and could be of interest if you want to explore the statements further.

Week 9 - Term 2 - 2023

Kaua e mate wheke mate ururoa

Don't die like a octopus, die like a hammerhead shark

Octopus are renown for their lack of resistance when being captured, however a hammerhead shark will fight bitterly to the end, to the point that when you fillet it fresh, its meat quivers. Commonly used to encourage someone not to give up, no matter how hard the struggle is.

1. Understanding how NCEA requirements are changing. With the looming course selection happening from week 4 next term, if you have students who ask about anything NCEA, the latest guidelines and explanations are available.

We now have clarification regarding course endorsement - this is 14 credits for a course and must include one external. They also state that "kaiako are free to design NCEA courses using achievement standards from across two or more subjects"

2. The Year 10's after they finished their 3rd exam in 3 days!

Information for Staff

1. If you would like to support the CGHS students who are performing in the Adams Family production next week - you can purchase your tickets at https://www.cbhs.school.nz/the-adams-family/

2 NZQA has released an Insights paper looking into factors that impact on equitable participation of Māori and Pacific students in New Zealand Scholarship.

Based on two years of research, the paper finds that entries for ākonga Māori and Pacific students for NZ Scholarship are at disproportionately low rates, and typically in fewer NZ Scholarship subjects. Amongst the paper’s recommendations, it notes that achievement of 14 or more Excellence credits at NCEA Level 2 in a subject can be used as one of the signposts that a student has the potential of achieving NZ Scholarship in that subject. This may help with your consideration into who is entered into the Scholarship examinations.

3. The Definitive Guide to Artificial Intelligence in New Zealand - Danny Bedingfield from Cyclone held a webinar yesterday on the implications of AI in NZ schools. He had done a lot of background research and bought up a number of implications and considerations for NZ schools. Out of this, we will look at school wide policy linked to assessment.

The Webinar can be watched HERE and is available for the next 2 months.

The relevant slides from the webinar with various links can be accessed HERE.
